The Byron Website
The purpose of the website is to move away from literary tomes and to publish Byron Bytes - brief articles about the life and times of the poet Lord George Byron, and his associates. This is presented in an easy-going format which will take only a few minutes to read. My aim is to complete each article in no more than the equivalent of three A4 sheets of paper. Apologies if I overstep the mark from time to time!
I have just completed lengthier articles on the re-birth of Frankenstein and Dracula at Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva. It was here that Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein; or, Prometheus Unbound and Dr. John Polidori wrote The Vampyre.
I am also publishing a somewhat lengthy article on the retrospective definition of Lord Byron as the ‘World’s First Celebrity’ and a ‘Rock Star’. Quite a challenge that one – and a higher than usual dependence on AI! I welcome feedback regarding its accuracy.
At the start of next year, I will be focusing upon new articles concerning Lord Byron and his Athletic Prowess. Even though he had a deformed right foot and calf, he nevertheless became a strong and athletic young man – known for his boxing, fencing, swimming - and pistol shooting. I shall take each subject in turn and look at his personal achievements and legacy. His athletic prowess reflects his rebellious nature and tendency to engage in strenuous, sometimes dangerous, exercise to overcompensate for his lameness.
The Author
It was at Woking Grammar School in Surrey, England, that I first discovered my passion for History and English Literature. I graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Economic History. Apparently, I have literary genes – my dad’s side of the family were Fleet Street editors and Academics. I guess you could say writing was in my blood! But I am not a computer whiz!
With Lord George Byron’s ancestral home on my doorstep, I have been a frequent visitor to Newstead Abbey for the past fifty years! Perhaps not surprisingly, following a career in market research and with a naturally investigative mindset, I recently sought to discover the truth about the life of the poet - both at home and abroad.
This soon developed into a passionate desire to walk in his footsteps and determine the true facts about his life and legacy - and record my findings in a concise easy-going style of writing.
Some might call me a ‘Byronista’. I am a follower of Byron, but not in a starry-eyed, sexy way. I am a Chronicler and Iconoclast – interested in the granular details of his life, correspondence, conversations and historical context. I hope to have avoided the myths which surround his lifestyle, but recognise that this is not always easy, or indeed possible! His memoirs were burnt to ashes. However, we still have not only his prolific correspondence, journals, conversations and observations to reflect upon, but also the memoirs and biographies of his contemporaries.
Welcome to Byroniana. I hope you enjoy the new website.
